One of the really fun parts about media relations is when you get to develop a story idea from the ground up and all of the pieces fall into place. Even more fun: When that story is going to help others.

We recently worked with KING 5’s Evening Magazine to highlight two local organizations, Rainier Valley Food Bank and Solid Ground, who are helping to end hunger in the Seattle area and beyond.

In our discussions with these organizations, we found out that most people don’t really know the types of items that food banks need the most – which is evident by the boxes of macaroni and cheese and cans of tomatoes that sit on their shelves while their stock of rice and lentils is depleted.

During the holiday season, giving back tends to be more top-of-mind, and we wanted our story to educate the public on how their generosity could go even further to help those in need.

Here are some of the little known facts and popular misconceptions:

  • Rainier Valley Food Bank serves one of the most diverse populations and offering nutritious and familiar foods to those they serve is vital – like cabbage and coconut milk to make curry.
  • Rice, red lentils and mung beans are among the most requested and needed items.
  • Fresh produce and deli meat are greatly appreciated! Forget what you’ve heard about donating non-perishable items only.
  • Only about 5% of those served by the food bank are homeless. The vast majority of people have more than one job but aren’t able to make enough money to provide nutritious meals for their families in an increasingly expensive city.

Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for Rainier Valley Food Bank and new or gently used gardening items for Solid Ground’s Lettuce Link program to the event.
