Happy Earth Day!
Today we celebrate awareness and appreciation for our natural environment. While this annual tribute is an incredible way to elevate the issues, it’s important that we recognize our impact the other 364 days of the year. As an office dedicated to reducing our environmental impact, supporting a robust network of cleantech clients and living in the uber-green city of Seattle, we’ve made Earth Day a week-long celebration.
After a rousing kick-off game of “Where Do I Toss This?” we activated the office “Wall of Green” (see photo above) for employees to share what they’re doing to reduce their environmental impact at home and in the office. Who knew so many of us walked to work, used worm bins and even promoted eco-friendly products in our daily account work?
To give due credit to our budding green ambassadors, we launched the “Eco Hero” competition. Throughout the week employees have nominated their colleagues after catching them recycling paper, turning off their computer monitor, coming up with a new way to conserve water and implementing other eco-friendly tactics.
Furthermore, we armed the staff with knowledge each day, providing compelling facts on the issues, and ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Here are just a few:
- According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than 665,000 tons of waste is created every day in the United States, adding up to more than 243 million tons a year.
- To produce each week’s Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year.
- Each year, the Puget Sound is sullied by 14 million pounds of toxic chemicals and oil and grease from storm water runoff.
- In Seattle, Hydroelectric makes up 91.2% of our fuel mix.
Scary, huh? Well, we’re going to ease the stress and provide some local opportunities to help celebrate Earth Day this year, and make in impact in the community.
