One year ago, Weber Shandwick developed the Ranny Cooper Award for Exceptional Leadership (“The Ranny”) to honor the tremendous legacy of Ranny Cooper, who stepped down from her full-time role as president of Global Public Affairs last June following a remarkable 25-year career with our firm. The award was designed to recognize a colleague in North America who embodies her four core values: Championship of quality work; generosity in mentorship; passion for making the world a better place; and a clear moral compass.
Out of 21 nominated leaders at Weber Shandwick, we couldn’t be more excited, inspired and humbled to recognize Seattle’s very own Rose Berg as the inaugural recipient of The Ranny!
We’re incredibly fortunate to have such extraordinary colleagues, and Rose stands out among them all. Rose epitomizes the values of The Ranny in everything she does. She’s described as a “relentless champion of talent,” “a connector of people of ideas,” “a client service and social impact maven,” and an “empowering, collaborative and caring leader.” We recently sat down with Rose to discuss this award and what she has learned during her career spanning social impact and public affairs.
What is some of the best advice you have received and how does it guide you today?
I have been so lucky to have great teachers and sages in my life, and they’ve told me to make a conscious choice to advocate and work for the people who seek solutions. Through this I have learned to treat everyone with respect. You don’t have to like each other, but you must respect each other. I guarantee the person who works for you today, could be your client or boss in the not-so-distant future.
What’s one standout moment from your career at Weber Shandwick?
There is no higher honor than being recognized by your peers for mentorship, leadership and community service. So I was deeply touched when I heard that my colleagues had nominated me, and that ultimately I had been selected to receive “The Ranny.” Ranny Cooper is someone I have admired for many years, for embodying strong values and fiercely championing women in public office, among her other accomplishments. So this is that moment.
The world of public relations and marketing has changed a lot in recent years. What advice do you consistently give new team members just starting their careers?
Listen. Read. Time for reflection often is undervalued in the communications field. But it is in these moments that our best ideas are cultivated. And don’t stop there. Self-advocate. Manage up. And, have the courage to bring those ideas to the table.
What’s your secret sauce for building a strong team?
Replacing worry with trust. Communications is a team sport. We must trust each other to do our best work and to back each other up. This is the difference between being good or great.
