Here at Weber Shandwick, we do everything from traditional PR to digital marketing and social campaigns. And that means that if there’s one thing that all of us here have in common, it’s reading. Not just the latest breaking news, either — we read everything from lengthy research reports and white papers to 140 character Tweets from our favorite journalists and companies. And of course, we try to stay up to date on current memes of the moment.
But what do we choose to read when we’re out of the office? Here are a few books I’ve recently enjoyed that are sure to liven up your summer reading list.
Why Some People Excel Under Pressure and Some Don’t
By: Paul Sullivan
While most people (including myself) associate the word “clutch” with athletics, being clutch is also an important skill in the business world. You never know when you’ll need to shift your approach on a dime (even when it’s been planned for months), or if you’ll be needed to step in and help your clients out of a last minute bind. This book explores the question “Is clutch performance innate, or can it be learned?” and provides real world examples of people, ranging from CEOs to famed athletes, who have proved to be clutch when stakes are high. The book also shares advice that can help you overcome extreme pressure and achieve greatness.
10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work and Team with Positive Energy
By: Jon Gordon
If you’re looking for a quick read and want to give your team some extra “oomph,” this book is for you. It’s centered around ten rules. Without giving away too much, rest assured that these ten rules will change the way you approach new or unexpected challenges, and will help empower you to lead your team to greatness. As the title notes, energy is a main focus of this book — and the author, Jon Gordon, makes the claim that energy is the currency of personal and professional success today. And I agree! Having positive energy is contagious and usually translates to high performing teams, whether you’re gearing up for a product launch, executive media tour, website redesign or anything else that comes your way.
20 Influential Women Share Their Secrets to Leadership, Business and Life
By: Nancy D. O’Reilly, PSYD
This book features short passages and essays from 20 women who work in a variety of fields, and aims to help empower women — both in the workplace, and in life. The book discusses a variety of topics, but one section that stood out was the chapter on the power of perspective and perception, where O’Reilly writes: “Master your mind. Shift your gaze.” This is a great reminder for all of us to keep things in perspective, both in your career and personal life.
So, what’s on your reading list this summer?
